The game picks one. They are alternatives, in the order it prefers them.

Only when the player carries

*{Michi} scans your equipment and eagerly spots her grandfather's bow.* WOW! You actually found it! I can't believe it!

The conversation forks on the graph-variable check:

If True

  • {Judai} ambushed me in the tombs ... I had to defend myself ... I'm sorry ...

    Requires a Medium check of

*The elf's head tilts in confusion. She gazes through you with her lower jaw slack.* {Judai} followed you? And tried to attack you? Like, with a real weapon?

    • He was paranoid about your involvement with outsiders. He thought I was trying to steal your family's treasure.

That, unfortunately, sounds like my brother. He's always had a habit of intimidating others and taking things too far ... I'm sorry, {[player]}. For all the trouble I've put in your way.

I had always intended to give the bow to whoever could retrieve it from the tombs ... figured it would weed out the tourists. I'd get my grandpa's bow out of that tomb and into the sunlight again.

Slaying monsters and seeing the world like its glory days ...

I knew that {Judai} wanted the bow to rest and decay with grandpa ... I never imagined he'd take it this far.

Please, take grandpa %Ryoshi's% bow. Especially after all that's happened, it feels like a waste to just haul it back to the {Sheru Tombs} ...

      • All right. For you, I'll make sure it sees the world .

Thank you, {[player]}. I'll rest easier knowing a piece of the {Sakos} is moving across the realm—parts I could only dream of.

I hope you can forgive my brother for his violence.

        Good luck out there ...

        The conversation ends

      • I will carry on %Ryoshi's% legacy.

Requires a Low check of Marksman

I'm glad I can give it to someone who appreciates the art. Here, I found these poking around some ruins in the forest. You'll have more use for them than I will!

Thank you, {[player]}. I'll rest easier knowing a piece of the {Sakos} is moving across the realm—parts I could only dream of.

I hope you can forgive my brother for his violence.

        {Vali}.

        The conversation ends

      • I'm sorry {Michi}, I don't feel comfortable taking this. It belongs to you.

Oh ... okay. I'll just hold onto it, then. Maybe even set up some {arani} bottles in the forest for target practice. I bet that'd make grandpa proud ...

I hope you can forgive my brother for his violence ...

        {Vali}, {[player]}.

        • Changes a variable of something the compendium does not publish

        The conversation ends

    • Correction: He DID attack me.
    • What? Are you saying you don't believe me?

No, I'm definitely not saying that. Though, I wish I were ... {Judai's} always had a habit of intimidating and taking things too far ... I'm sorry, [player]. For all the trouble I've put in your way.

Continues where this conversation already went

  • Your brother confronted me into the tombs.

You mean, like, he followed you down there? What happened?!

    • He was paranoid about your involvement with outsiders. He thought I was trying to steal your family's treasure.

That sounds like my brother, he's always had a habit of intimidating others and taking things too far ...

I just didn't think he cared this way. Spying on me, following strangers around with {Dreamer} knows what intents.

This whole plan backfired like some student alchemist's concoction ... but now that we're here, what do you say, [player]?

Do you want to show my grandfather's bow the world?

Continues where this conversation already went

    • He wanted a fight. He also planned to report you to the elder.
    • He was trying to kill me!

H-he actually said that? *{Michi's} tone indicates she believes it more than she's letting on, though her tone seems to switch to one of genuine remorse.*

Continues where this conversation already went

If False

You know? I really just wanted to see it again ... see it somewhere other than that dank, dark tomb. Now that I have ... I think I'd like it to see even more of the world.

What do you say, {[player]}? Will you show this bow to the world?

  • I would be honored.

It's all yours, {[player]}! Just take good care of it, and swing it by for a visit every once in a while!

    The conversation ends

  • Of course! This {bow} is incredibly, and one of a kind!

Requires a Low check of Marksman

I'm glad I can give it to someone who appreciates the art. Here, I found these poking around some ruins in the forest. You'll have more use for them than I will!

    • Gives 25×

    The conversation ends

  • No thanks. I'm honored, but I got all I can carry. You keep it.

*The {karu elf} stares down at the bow, almost as if it were a newborn, and smiles.* You're right, stranger. I will hold onto it ... and who knows, maybe it will come in handy out in the forest.

Thank you again for retrieving it for me ...I can at least give you this for your trouble. It's my rainy day fund.

The conversation forks on what the game checks, in this order:

And ironically ... it is raining! Funny how life sometimes works... anyway, don't let me keep you out in this weather listening to me babble on.

    {Vali}!

    • Changes a variable of something the compendium does not publish

    The conversation ends

Only when the player carries

*The young {karu} scans your equipment and is taken back when she sees your bow.* Woah, woah! Where did you find that?

Only while The Branches Below is succeeded

  • I found it while helping {Dento} clear the {Sheru Tombs}.

Oh. I heard a traveler cleared the infestation from the tombs, and I thought it might be you ... that's honestly why I was going to ask you to retrieve this for me ... sometimes things just work out, I guess!

Continues where this conversation already went

  • I found it in a chest, deep underground.

That makes sense because it's my grandfather's bow. You found it in his tomb.

  • Um. In a tomb. I think.

Yes. My grandfather's tomb. That's his short bow ... he made it.

Continues where this conversation already went

  • [Lie] I bought it off some traveling merchant.

Requires a Low check of Speech

Damn grave robbers. They're everywhere nowadays. Someone must've stolen it from my grandpa's tomb and flipped it for some quick coin ...

I suppose you bought it, fair and square. It would be unfair to take it from you after you spent honest coin on it ... besides, all I ever wanted was for grandpa's bow out of that tomb. Have someone shake the dust off and let it see the world; you did that for me.

I'm glad I got to meet you. At least I know it's getting put to good use ... just bring it by every now and then so I can see it.

    The conversation ends

  • None of your busisness.

Actually, it is my business! That's my grandpa {Ryoshi's} bow! Now tell me what you're doing with it ...

    Returns to an earlier point

  • [Leave] *Run away.*

*You hear the young {karu elf} call in the distance.* FINE, TAKE THE BOW! AT LEAST IT'S NOT IN SOME GROSS TOMB ANYMORE!

    THAT'S ALL I WANTED!

{Judai} told me all about what happened ... I'm sorry he followed you like that—what a creep. If you have a sleight of hand, I'm sure he's keeping the bow on him from now on ... everyone goes to sleep. Just thoughts.

Anway ... was there something you needed?

The conversation ends

Only when all of these hold:

My parents have been worse than ever since {Judai} went missing. I don't have the heart to tell them what happened ...

I'm still appreciative you got grandpa's bow of that tomb. I wouldn't go flashing it around {Garkai}, though. Some of the older {karu} will recognize it.

But I'm sure you came to talk about something other than all this. What's on your mind?

The conversation ends

Hello, mister / miss! I haven't seen you around the city before. You must be a traveler!

    That's my grandfather, %Ryoshi%. He was a very respected {karu} in {Garkai}, especially for a {Sako}.

Only when the conversation's own flag ryoshiAlt is set

    • Tell me more about his %custom shortbow%.

I'll never forget it ... it was made from the twisting woods of the {nakabani}, {sheru}, and {zokai} tree. He adorned it with the feathers and claws of the forest creatures. He carried it with him everywhere ... %I'd do anything to see it one last time% ...

      • Where is the bow? Perhaps I could retrieve it.

I was hoping you'd say that!

His bow is down in the %Sheru Tombs%. There's a special burial plot for passed {elders} and honorary leaders.

The conversation forks on what the game checks, in this order:

        Otherwise

Just a fair warning, the tombs are crawling with monsters lately, but you seem pretty used to that sort of thing.

If you decide to go down there, I know the {priests} and the {shaman} would appreciate if you took care of the infestation.

The only other obstacle would be unlocking %grandpa's old trunk%, but luckily for you, I have a %key%!

I only care about my %grandpa's bow%, so don't feel like you have to exterminate any monsters. Come back to me when you find the bow.

        Thanks again.

      • This sounds like you need a favor, and I really don't have time for that at the moment.

You caught me! I was hoping you'd be up for a walk in the %Sheru Tombs%.

The conversation forks on what the game checks, in this order:

        Otherwise

Though, from what the {priests} at the {temple} have been saying, it's kind of a mess down there right now anyways—monsters and such.

Well, if you change your mind, let me know! I might even just let you keep it ...

        The conversation ends

Only while The Branches Below is succeeded

I heard you already got all the monsters out, so I figured it'd be easy enough.

Continues where this conversation already went

    • Why was he so respected?

He was a warrior! A protector. A while back, before I was born, there was a great overrunning of monsters into {Garkai}.

%Grandpa Ryoshi% guided the defense with his %homemade shortbow% and all the {Ekiros} that could pick up a weapon.

      Returns to an earlier point

    • He's gone now?

Yes. *The sighs and smiles reminiscently.* Dozens of monsters couldn't bring my grandpa down over the centuries, but time catches up with us all in the end ...

Only when the conversation's own flag ryoshiAlt is set

      • Well what do you think?

Personally, I think it was a bit of everything. His body was definitely losing the ability to fight off the swamp illnesses. But at the same time, I knew he could've pushed on longer had he felt like fighting it ...

My mother is really the only one in the family that really thinks he wasn't sick ... but denial is typical of her in stressful situations.

        Returns to an earlier point

      • What's {lung rot}?

It's a wetland illness. It causes painful bouts of hacking and wheezing ... the elderly tend not to fair well against it.

        Returns to an earlier point

      • What did he die of?

Old age or {lung rot}, depending on who you ask.

        Returns to an earlier point

      • I'm sorry for your loss.

Don't be. I loved my grandfather dearly, but he lived a long and fulfilling life. I appreciate the sentiment, of course. Did you want to know anything else?

        Returns to an earlier point

    • What did you mean by: 'especially for a {Sako}'?

The {Sakos} are often overlooked in {Garkai}. Under the glory of the {Ekiros} and the wealth of the {Tsukis}, we're treated like nothing.

A whisper in the {Niko's} screech, as the old elves say.

      Returns to an earlier point

It's not exactly a premium location, but I wouldn't call it bleak. It's mostly {Sakos} buried there, so it's all family. {Karus} who wanted to rest by the water, not in the forest or some tomb. {Karus} my parents have fond memories of.

    Only when the player carries

    • When you put it like that, I understand completely.
