The game picks one. They are alternatives, in the order it prefers them.

Only after the player has spoken to the speaker

Stop! -er, Hault! You've wandered into Ishgana, realm of many Wind Wizards - you are now bound by our law.

Ishgana’s folk are peace-minded, ever welcoming - lately though, a fiendish blood cult stalks our land, and trust grows thin.

You’ll forgive our caution, but you’ll be watched closely - its my job - er, duty, that is. *The guard stiffens and clears his throat.* If this finds you agreeable, be on your way.

  • Your vigilance does you credit. I’ll keep to your laws.

    • Changes how the speaker feels about the player

Thanks! *The guard exlaims in a higher voice than he'd greeted you with.*I mean - *His voice suddenly drops oncemore.* - you courtesy is noted, Viasha, though I’ll keep from pleasantries until our troubles are laid to rest.

Still… I’m glad we share an understanding... You may be on your way - unless you had more to say?

    The conversation ends

  • I have questions about this cult you speak of.

    All right.

    • Tell me again who they are.

They are ruthless fiends, all of them - dabblers in the forbidden arts, drinkers of their own sorcery.

      Returns to the previous choices

    • Is there someone I can speak to for more information on the Children of the Crimson Serpent?

Aye, Shrinemaiden Tama seems privy to matters of the Blood Cult - no doubt through her counsel with the Chief.

Speaking of which, you might seek Chief Renhai herself… if you can but coax her from her tent.

      Returns to the previous choices

    • Why is does the cult stalk your village? Surely there are easier targets traveling the roads.

I know not why they’ve set upon our village, though one may guess their purpose lies in our blood.

Whatever their reasons may be, I’ll not see another soul taken. Not while I draw breath.

      Returns to the previous choices

    • I had other questions.

The conversation forks on the graph-variable check:

      If True

      Keep them brief.

      Returns to an earlier point

      If False

      Keep them brief.

      The conversation ends

  • Who are the Children of the Crimson Serpent?

They are ruthless fiends, all of them - dabblers in the forbidden arts, drinkers of their own sorcery.

Continues where this conversation already went

  • Understood.

Good. Be on your way then - unless you've more to say?

    The conversation ends

  • I understand your concern. I will mind myself while I stay in Ishgana.
  • I am subject to mine own law, not yours. I’ll not bend the knee to fear and suspicion.
    • Changes how the speaker feels about the player

You have leapt high upon my list, Viasha. I will not spill your blood here - no, not by the law I keep.
Yet mark me: you shall not draw a single breath in Ishgana that I do not witness.

    The conversation ends

Only after the player has spoken to the speaker

Hail traveler.

I've been watching you mingle with our tribe lately. You have my respect for helping us and appreciating our values.

*He let's out a relieved sigh and rests his otherwise stern posture for a moment.*

Was there anything you needed?

Only after the player has spoken to the speaker

Oh, it's you... If only the winds would sweep you out of our lives.

Then we could enjoy our celebrations in peace once more.

Speak or leave, {Viasha}.

Only after the player has spoken to the speaker

You bother me again? I will have to watch you carefully while you skulk about our camp.

If there is any good in you {Viasha}, I await proof but as it stands, all I see in you is a dishorable vagrant.

Prove me wrong or I will imprison you myself.

The conversation ends

Only after the player has spoken to the speaker

Ah traveler, stop a moment to feel the blessed winds.

There is no greater serenity than these moments ... *He pauses for quiet reflection before speaking again.*

Was there something troubling you?

Only after the player has spoken to the speaker

Hello again. State your business.

What the player can raise (6)

The game offers every topic whose requirement is met, in the order it prefers them.

Only while Where the Wind Blows is unstarted

  • Is this the way all new comers are treated?

As I have spoken, Ishgana is a haven of peace, a village that delights in life. But so long as danger stalks those under my protection, I will meet all newcomers with due caution.

    The conversation ends

Only when the conversation's own flag Ishgana is set

  • Tell me more about Ishgana, the man.

[Will write when I have more time to read up on Ishgana lore. I want this to be really good.]

    The conversation ends

Only when the conversation's own flag renhai is set

  • Why does your Chief keep herself shut away?

She has decreed that no Wind Wizard may depart Ishgana while the Blood Cult yet lingers. It has sown no small measure of division among our people.

She stays in her yurt to seek clarity - reading her black book of law, and meditating on Ishgana himself, the first of our line.

    The conversation ends

  • You are the guard of this village then? Do you work alone?

Aye, I serve alone now. Once I guarded with my father, but he spoke too boldly against the Chief’s new manner of justice, so he was relieved of his duty.

    • What laws and customs should I be aware of?

Our laws are simple. Do not commit any crimes against us and you should be fine.

      As for our customs though...

Take a moment to look around, what do you feel?

      • Wasted opportunity. You should attract more travelers to visit Ishgana. More coin and appreciation for your tribe can't hurt.

Hmm, you raise an interesting idea. I had never considered such things.

Many more people would have the opportunity to learn our ways.

Maybe with some increased trade profits we can fortify ourselves better, too. I will mention your suggestion to Renhai.

        Returns to an earlier point

      • I see easy targets. There are gaps in your walls and everyone's homes are wide open.

*His eyes narrow and the grip on his holstered weapon tightens.*

A fair observation, though not one to boast of, wanderer. I shall see to our defenses at once.

But mind yourself - I’ll be watching just as close.

        Returns to an earlier point

      • Harmony.

*He takes a deep breath and closes his eyes. A gentle breeze blows through the surrounding trees and lifts edges of nearby yurts.*

Yes, this is one of our values. We often stop what we are doing to appreciate even the smallest of breezes.

In appreciating the wind, we create moments of harmony in our lives.

Enjoy the wind with us, traveler.

        Returns to an earlier point

      • Stagnation.

Stagnation you say? *He looks around the camp, almost as if he was seeing it for the first time.*

It troubles me if you genuinely feel that traveler.

I hope that you speak to others around the camp. I am sure you will feel their spirit and joy for life itself.

        Returns to an earlier point

      • I don't feel anything.

Truly? Do you not feel the bonds of our community? The duty to our people and ancestors? The celebrations of life and wind?

I urge you to explore our camp, there is much to learn from our ways.

If there is only one thing you do here, I hope you find a nice hill and gaze out to the plains. If you stay still long enough, you'll be graced by a gentle breeze. It's almost like listening to the world speak.

Let the wind punctuate the moment... let it flow through you. Not your person but through your mind.

In that moment, when you look to the shimmering leaves of the Ori Tree, all of your woes will be carried away. I promise you.

        Returns to an earlier point

    • You seem quite young to be a guard.

Aye, I have been newly appointed.

Do not fear traveller, I have been trained since birth for this duty. As the Ori Tree ordains.

I am ready to serve, with a strong-arm and vigilant spirit, I endeavor to uphold the law.

You needn't concern yourself with matters of the guard.

It was simply time for me to replace the previous guard captain.

      • What happened to the previous guard?

It's a private matter. If you wish to learn more about our culture, I suggest you consort with one of the tribe elders.

        Returns to an earlier point

      • If I recall correctly, the Ori Tree ordained professions to each Ishgana family, so I assume you've replaced a sibling or parent?

*He pauses for a moment and you notice a break in his otherwise staunch countenance.*

You ... I see you have an astute understanding of our ways. *He takes a forced breath before speaking again, it is clear you have discerned something he did not wish to disclose.*

Our family was ordained to be the guards for the tribe. For many generations we have staunchly protected our kin.

That is until my ... father ... decided that peace was too difficult to maintain.

And now he spends his days toiling on rebuilding our defenses. No doubt grumbling and blaming everyone for his actions but himself.

Speak to him if you wish traveler, I must get back to my duties. We will not speak of this matter again.

Be warned though, he is a stern man. Please keep this matter to yourself traveler. We will speak of it no more.

        Returns to an earlier point

      • I understand, I won't push it further.
        • Changes how the speaker feels about the player

*A sigh of relief washes over his face. It is clear that the topic is painful to him and most likely unresolved.* Thank you. You have my respect, traveler.

        Returns to an earlier point

    • So ... no thievery, debauchery or brawling then?
      • Changes how the speaker feels about the player

*As you list a litany of offenses, he grimaces, but you seem to awaken a surge of contempt at the mention of brawling.*

      Brawling?! Violence in our camp?!

Do not test my patience {Viasha}, if I see you being violent toward anyone here, I shall personally see to throwing you in jail myself.

*The young guard takes a deep breath before returning to his original stoic-self.*

      Returns to an earlier point

    • I can tell that you'd be the life of the party.

I am what I am so that others may enjoy their celebrations and live in peace.

You could say that I exist so that the party can happen. *He stands even more proudly at saying this.*

Some day I suspect you will be a part of something bigger than yourself. When that day comes, I hope you choose duty over your personal goals.

      Returns to an earlier point

    • There was something else I wanted to ask.

      As you wish.

      The conversation ends

  • What can you tell me about this settlement?

What specifically would you like to know about?

    • What is there to see?

Ishgana offers much to the weary traveler.

You can find our local fireworks maker, he's quite the eccentric fellow.

We have our own goods trade area. As expected, you won't find better wind magics avilable anywhere else.

Nori runs the local inn. Stop by for all the local food and drink you can stomach.

On the hill near the windsurfers you'll find our shrine to the Twelve Winds. Be sure to stop by and pay your respects in peace.

      Returns to the previous choices

    • Who is in charge?

Chief Renhai governs Ishgana - a woman of courage and sound judgment. She abides within her yurt for the present, yet should you succeed in gaining audience, she will receive you honorably.

You may find her up the path to the north of Ishgana.

The path lies through the trade district; ascend the stone stair, and you’ll find her dwelling upon the hill, marked by a smoking pit.

      Returns to the previous choices

    • What is the huge tree in the middle of town?

That is our most sacred Ori Tree.

Our professions were decided by the will of its spirit long ago. Our ancestors have honored this custom for generations.

It is the symbol of our people and we worship it with celebration and prayer.

I will guard it faithfully for as long as I draw breath.

      Returns to the previous choices

    • On second thought, I had some other questions.

      Ask away.

Other entry points (2)

The game reaches these from elsewhere: a quest event, or another conversation.

These are dangerous times. I am vigilant for the sake of peace.

  • Dangerous times? Maybe I can help.

*The young guard visibly winces for a moment.*

Uh, ahem, that is to say, there have been some disturbances of late, but it's nothing we can't handle.

I am not permitted to discuss matters of security in detail with {Viasha} but, what skills do you offer?

    • I have combat training. I can help defend the tribe.

Hmm, you certainly have a soldier's steely resolve, I can see it in your eyes.

    • The wildnerness is my teacher, and I have survived many encounters.

Your hands and scars certainly tell a tale of overcoming many odds.

I sense no malice in your eyes, {Viasha}. On most occasions I would be more than enough to defend this settlement, however, lately I feel ill-equipped.

Normally, we'd be preparing for the festival of Wandering Winds. But we are enduring dire circumstances.

Our great Ori Tree is a shadow of its former health, and some of our wizards have gone missing.

*He hesitates after saying this out loud.* I am not at liberty to speak too openly about these matters with outsiders.

I think we could use your support. But perhaps our leader Renhai would be a better judge of your character than myself. Seek her out if you wish, her yurt is at the northern part of the settlement.

      • Runs AddJournalEntryNode

      Returns to an earlier point

    • I have a habit of being at the right place at the right time.

Maybe you are the right person, and maybe this is the time we need help the most.

Continues where this conversation already went

    • My negotiation skills are second to none. An outside party is a valuable tool.

Requires a Medium check of Speech

Well, that certainly sounds reasonable to me. I worry that our foes may be less open.

Continues where this conversation already went

    • [Lie] You have nothing to fear from me. I have helped many in need.

Requires a Medium check of Endurance

Don't make me regret placing my trust in you, Viasha.

Continues where this conversation already went

    • My arcane prowess allows me great power over others.

Maybe your magical finesse can make up for what I lack. I can only tackle things head-on with steel.

Continues where this conversation already went

    • My talent for the mystic arts can aid you. I can see beyond what sight reveals.

There is much we do not know about what plagues us. Your sight into such things might just be what we need.

Continues where this conversation already went

    • I have varied abilities. I can adapt to almost any situation.
    • I unsure if my skills will be useful, but I'd like to do whatever I can to help.
  • Are you always so 'vigilant'?

When I'm on guard duty, always.

Do you have a problem with that {Viasha}? Should I keep my eye out for you?

    • Not at all, guardsman.

As you were then. No funny business though, you hear?

      Returns to an earlier point

    • Well, only if you caught me breaking the law.

You'll find that I am not one for that kind of twisted humor. Especially when I'm on duty. *He puffs his chest out at you.*

If you wish to be locked up though, I won't hestitate to put you behind bars myself.

I'll be watching you closely now, {Viasha}.

      Returns to an earlier point

    • [Stay silent].

Hmm, you're a very unsettling traveler ... I don't want to see you acting strange toward our good-natured folk.

You'll make everyone feel uneasy being silent like that.

      Returns to an earlier point

    • [Lie]. I just admire your dedication to your duties, sir!

Requires a Low check of Speech

Thank you! With that kind of attitude I needn't worry about you! *He tilts his head toward you in salute.*

      Returns to an earlier point

    • No, but I had some other questions.

      Certainly.

      The conversation ends

  • Your weapon has no signs of wear. Have you ever seen real combat?

Requires a Low check of Heavy Weapon

*He stifles his words and reasses your disposition as he glances at your hands which show clear signs of heavy weapon use.*

It is not in my nature to lie, and I can tell that my words won't get past one who also wields hefty armaments.

It is true, we do not see much direct combat here in the camp and any training is done with wooden weapons.

The sound of metal clanging against metal disturbs the peace around here, but we find the sound of wood striking wood to be much gentler on the ears.

If you are concerned if I have the experience to protect others, you needn't worry. I am trained. And I am ready.

*While the guard lacks age and experience his countenance certainly gives off a strong air of conviction.*

    Returns to an earlier point

  • Remind me again what troubles the tribe?

Certainly, as I said, normally we'd be preparing for the festival of Wandering Winds. But we are enduring dire circumstances.

Our great Ori Tree is dying, and some of our wizards have gone missing.

I'd prefer it if you spoke to our leader Renhai about these matters though.

Please do not cause any problems for her, or you will soon be answering to me. *You can tell from his tone that he is deathly serious about upholding the law here.*

    Returns to an earlier point

  • Actually, I wanted to ask you something else.

    Ask away then.

    The conversation ends

Affirmative, viasha. I am here to uphold peace within the tribe and to aid those in need.

You have our protection while here, so long as you adhere to our ways.

Think of yourself as an honored guest while here and do not forget your manners when speaking to our tribesmen.
