The game picks one. They are alternatives, in the order it prefers them.

Only when the game's own check passes. The compendium cannot name what it reads (GET [ TALK TO KENZA AFTER ISHI FIGHT ]).

You better have a damned good reason as to why one of my Journeyman is dead!

  • I caught Ishi in a lie about where he was the night the beacon was damaged. When he knew he'd been caught, he attacked me.

*The captain's eyes fill with disapointment, but not shock.* That fool ... driven to his own death by that damned beacon.

Ishi did little else but complain about the beacon, I was worried he might do something irrational ... but all of this?

Facts are facts, I suppose, and you were within your rights to defend yourself.

Though this situation brings me no joy, I do thank you in getting to the bottom of this dishonesty - here.

    The conversation ends

  • I found a piece of his damaged weapon in the beacon's lantern room. When I confronted him with it, he attacked me.

The graph connects this choice to nothing, so the conversation stops here.

  • [Note to Rak] He attacked me because he found out I had this. I was simply defending myself.
  • [Show evidence] He didn't want you to know I found this note discussing a plan to burn down the beacon, and this rain-soaked wick near the furnace in the beacon.

What the player can raise (10)

The game offers every topic whose requirement is met, in the order it prefers them.

Only when all of these hold:

  • Did you see anything out of the ordinary the night the beacon got damaged?

The graph holds 17 copies of this topic, one per character, each continuing below.

Only when the conversation's own flag _talkedToEin is set

I don't really recall ... though, maybe you have a good stiff drink to job my memory?

    • [Arani] Here, take an arani.

Hehe. *The satisfied Karu pops the top of the arani bottle.*

Now, what were you asking? Oh, yes! I did see something the night of that big storm.

I was at Shun's, enjoying his roof and a couple arani, when the wind picked up and carried some of his gear out to the beach.

When we ran out to retrieve it, we noticed some shadowy figures on the balcony of the beacon.

Only after the player has spoken to someone the data does not name Fisherman

      • Who's Shun?

        Only the first time

He's another fisherman. Lives just up the beach, next to that guy from the swamps.

        Returns to the previous choices

I think I ran that by you already.

Shun lives just up the beach, I said.

Continues where this conversation already went

      • How many shadowy figures?

Ugh. With all the arani in my system, I was seeing two or three of everything.

If it weren't for Shun, I wouldn't be sure if I really saw anything at all.

But he was there as well, and he saw the same thing I did.

Only after the player has spoken to someone the data does not name Fisherman

        • Who's Shun?
        • Was Shun as drunk as you were?

          Shun? No.

He had a couple after we docked the boats like always, but I had a few before and after the boat myself.

          Returns to the previous choices

I didn't see anything. There was a violent storm that night.

There isn't a lot some foreigner snooping around will do for that.

    • I already spoke to Ein. I know you saw figures in the beacon the night of the storm.

Ugh. All right, I did see something up in the beacon that night.

Looked like two people, but I can't be sure. Visibility was awful through the storm.

      • Could you make out any detail in the figures?

It looked like one was broader and shorter than the other. Perhaps a dwarf.

But again, I couldn't see much of anything.

        Returns to the previous choices

      • Did you see where they went after?

I didn't stick around to confirm. I wasn't very interested in the matter, and to be frank, I wasn't too upset about it either.

But there isn't many places to hide in Akaga.

Continues where this conversation already went

      • I know you were drinking that night. Do you think maybe this could've been a trick of the arani?

Talking to Ein, I can see how you might think something of that nature, but, no. I wasn't nearly to the point Ein was. I never am.

I had my wits about me, and I know what I saw.

        Returns to the previous choices

      Whatever you say, Viasha.

    • You seem pretty eager to turn my attention from this beacon.

Oh, please. I was with Ein the night of the storm, I was nowhere near that wretched beacon.

He came over like he always does during big storms. If you take a second to look down the beach, you'll notice his home lacks a roof.

Talk to him, he'll tell you the same.

I wouldn't say out of the oridnary, but ... perhaps given the circumstances.

The night I arrived in Akaga, the moon hung high and bright by the time I spoke to the inn keeper. As he was readying my room, two men entered from outside and quickly went upstaires.

It struck me as odd that two men already staying at the inn would have any sort of business in a nowhere-village like Akaga at that time of night.

Huh? What kind of an idiotic question is that?

If I'd have seen something, it'd be reported by now. Us Bladebrands are the law in this town. That means it's my job to report odd sightings.

Only thing I saw was a big storm. Wind, lightning, all that.

    • Where were you the night the beacon got damaged?

My partner, Rak, and I were stationed at the entrance to Akaga - pulling night-watch. We were clear across town from that ugly thing.

All right, all right. We were there. But just hear me out. That beacon's been nothin' but bad news for Aruden.

Sure, the shop owners and inn keepers love the beacon, its made them wealthy - but take a trip to Norakoji sometime if you ever want to see the flip side of the coin.

Sazzis everywhere - The problem's local as well. Have ya' talked to the local fisherman? They gotta' row out to sea to get a single daggerhead in their nets.

The port scares everything near 'em away - Not to mention the increase in crime.

        • So you admit it? You and Rak damaged the beacon.

Sure. Rak and I broke that mindless, awful beacon. My only regret is not burning the damend thing to the ground!

If we can overload the fuel pump, the whole thing goes KABOOM! It'll be a pile of rubble.

*The scribe nods.* Interesting ... interesting.

I do know exactly where this came from - I have an incident report with all the details you need.

And I'll give it to you, but, you have to do something for me first.

I lost something very special to - a katana my father used when he served as a Bladebrand.

Last week I was transporting some prisoners to Norakoji. We stopped to make camp for the night - when I woke up, my fathers katana was gone.

      • Or: you just give it to me. Otherwise, when I figure this out on my own and hand the suspects over to the empire, I'll make sure they know you impeded this investigation.

Okay, okay. Take it easy. Here.

Just don't let Kenza know I gave it to you.

      • Why can't you just give it to me?

        Not worth the risk.

Look, if my captain finds out I gave out Bladebrand paper work to a civilian, I'm as good as gone.

So, I need some gesture of faith - something to know I can trust you.

        Returns to the previous choices

      • I'll do it.

Great. We made camp far north of town, across a bridge overlooked by an old temple ruin, next to a couple Zokai trees.

I'll bet who ever stole my father's sword is near by.

If you can retrieve it, it'd be well worth the risk to give you the incident report.

    Very well civilian.

  • I'd like to report a crime against the empire.

This better be worth my time - What do you have to report?

    • Two Bladebrands named Ishi and Rak are repsonsible for the damage done to the beacon.

I assume you have some proof?

      • [Note to Rak] I found this on Rak. The Obsidian Dwarf at the Inn with a cold.

*The Enforcer scans the note - visually appalled.*

The conversation forks on the graph-variable check:

Come to think of it .. the night I came to Akaga, when I was checking into the Inn, two men came in from the rain in a big hurry - I figured just due to the storm.

As they ran upstairs to their room, one of them was sneezing - that was the night the beacon was damaged.

This note seems to tie them into things nicely.

        If True

Thank you for your diligent sleuthing, [player], but the empire will handle it from here.

Now that my work is done here, I'll go round up our friends at the inn and take them to Tonaki to await trial.

Here - a little compensation for you.

I still have work that needs to be done in Akaga, but I'll have one the port guards round up our friends at the inn and take them to Tonaki to await trial.

      • [Show evidence] I found this bit of steel in the beacon's lantern room, and I have the incident report of the weapon it came off of.

*The Enforcer goes over the evidence, making sure it is authentic.*

      • [Show evidence] I found this note discussing a plan to burn down the beacon, and this rain-soaked wick near the furnace in the beacon.

Only when all of these hold:

  • I'm looking for proof that this piece of broken steel came from a weapon owned by Ishi or Rak.

*The scribe nods.* Interesting ... interesting.

I have exactly what you're looking for - I have an incident report with all the details you need.

And I'll give it to you, but, you have to do something for me first.
